A Study on the Changes in the Tongue and Hyoid Bone Following Osteotomy for the Skeletal Class III Malocclusion

Abstract
This study was designed to compare pre-operation, and post- operation -over 6 month¢¥s follow-up for the skeletal class III malocclusion in order to investigate the changes in the Tongue and Hyoid bone following mandibular osteotomy. The subjects were 19 control subjects and 34 surgery subjects. The lateral cephalograms of the surgery group-were taken pre-operatively and over 6 months after operation.
The following conclusions were obtained.
1. Pre-operative and post operative sexual differences of the surgery group were found in the Tongue Area (T.A), the distance between palatal plane and tongue dorsum (K-L), the distance between cranial base and Hyoid bone (S-H), the distance between cervical vertebrae and Hyoid bone.
2. In the setback with below the 10 mm, intermaxillary area and the distance between the Maxillary plane and tongue dorsum were decreased (P < 0.01). The downward displacement of the hyoid bone was not recognized significantly.
3. In the setback with over the 11 mm, the distance between the hyoid bone and Genial tubercle, and the distance between the hyoid bone and the cervical vertebrae were decreased (P < 0.01). n
4. In the difference between the control group and the pre-operative surgery group, there were no significant differences except the SN-Po (P < 0.01), Sn-Mn. plane angle.
5. In the difference between the control group and the-10 mm below surgery group,. there were no significant differences except the distance between the palatal plane and the tongue dorsum (P.< 0.01).
6. In the difference between the control group and the 10 mm over surgery group, there were no significant differences except the SN-Mn. plane angle (P < 0.01).
